Panacea was founded on 20 August 1987 and is thus over 20 years old! Over the years, Panacea has changed a lot and all these developments have made it what it is today. In order to understand M.F.V. Panacea properly, it’s high time we delved into the archives to learn about the history of our great association...

How it all started

In 1984, it was decided that the three societies that existed then, the MSFG, the SMS and the MFV Placebo, should be united into one big foundation. Three years later, in 1987, Niels Maijers, Rien Molenaar, Michel Holtrighter and Dick Hofstee signed the Articles of Association at the civil law notary’s office. The next step was to borrow the name of the Greek goddess of healing, and the new association, Panacea, was founded.

The first 5 years – 1987-1992

When it was created, the Panacea Foundation consisted of 1240 members. The first Boards were mainly busy with shaping the new association and broadening its base. Promotional campaigns were organized and new committees and activities thought up. The Gala Ball, Almanac and Symposium committees were soon joined by PanEssay, the Events Committee, WAH (First Aid Committee) and the Working Group for Faculty days (now PanIC).

In 1993, Panacea metamorphosed from a foundation into an association. At that time it had 1560 members and the first quinquennial (‘lustrum’ in Dutch) had just been celebrated on the theme ‘Lines’.

2nd Lustrum – 1992-1997

In 1994, the Akcie, Orgie and BRC were founded; in the years that followed, even more committees, working groups and curriculum-related platforms saw the light. The Board of the time also decided to have the administrative year run concurrently with the calendar year so that working in the new Board would not fall in the summer vacation period.

In 1996, the degree programme in Dentistry, which had been closed in 1991 as a false economy, was started up again and the first students of a new cohort arrived. At the same time, the new HBO degree programme in oral hygiene joined the Faculty. Panacea decided to offer these new students the chance to join as well.

When the second ‘lustrum’ (10th anniversary) was held, with the theme ‘Operation X’, the society had 1880 members and had just held its first Labour Market Information Day.

3rd Lustrum – 1997-2002

In 1998, the old society song 'Drink more Fizz' was replaced by a more suitable song – ‘Lady Panacea’. In that same year various committees were founded for the new dentistry students, including ProDent, which represents the interests of the students, and Al-Dente, which organizes activities for dentistry and oral hygiene. The symposium committee (TaMoSympcie), the Labour Market Information Day committee and the Coordinator for Dentistry/Oral Hygiene on the Board followed later.
The leitmotif for the 10th-15th years of Panacea’s existence is undoubtedly the move. At the end of 2002, the moving plans became reality and Panacea, together with the Pharmacy society (Pharmaciae Sacrum) and the Movement Sciences society (Studiosi Mobilae), moved to rooms in the student corridor in the cellars of the Medical Faculty. This is where the Boardroom, meeting rooms, computer rooms and book desk are located – all of which were previously tucked away in a little building on the other side of the road.

As soon as the plans for the move first became known, it was decided to present a new logo. As the removal was postponed by the Faculty, the logo was eventually only presented during the third ‘lustrum’, with the theme ‘High Fever’.

4th Lustrum – 2002-2007

By 2002, the degree programmes in dentistry and oral hygiene had grown significantly and the decision was taken to restart the dentistry society, which had been closed when the Groningen dentistry programme ended in 1991. In 2003, T.M.F.V. Archigenes was founded and they now organize their own introductory programme and activities.

In the years that followed, M.F.V. Panacea was not idle either. The Fourth-year Committee (now BaCo) was founded and the Master’s Council and a band were also started up.

Several adjustments were made to the documents and regulations of the association. The Articles of Association were changed in 2003, and transitional arrangements for students of dentistry and oral hygiene were added. The result is that dentistry and oral hygiene students who joined M.F.V. Panacea before 2002 will remain members, but that new students in these programmes will no longer join Panacea.

In 2005 and 2006 the Standing Orders were also completely rewritten. The new Standing Orders, including changes to the titles of the management positions, were approved in 2006. At the same time the Association Document saw the light of day, setting out the day-to-day affairs of the association.

2007 was entirely devoted to the celebration of the 4th lustrum. The 20th birthday of our Lady was celebrated in style in a week of activities on the theme ‘Knock out your senses’. This prepared Panacea for the journey to her silver anniversary.

5th Lustrum – 2007-now

In 2008, the design for a beautiful new banner was approved. In that same year, M.F.V. Panacea was judged to be liable for tax and the finances of the association were closely examined.

In addition, in 2009 a six-person Board was inaugurated for the first time in the history of Panacea. A wonderful musical 'Hair' ware performed at Martiniplaza.

Panacea is on the way to its silver anniversary! Only two years to go – are you going to celebrate this milestone with us?
