Description

General information:
The orthopedics department of the UMCG is an academic department. This means that there is seen a selection of patients, and treatments are made for non-common diseases. The department employs nine orthopedic surgeons and about 10 assistants, 3 nurse practitioners and 2 Physician Assistants.

The focus areas of orthopedics include: childrens orthopedics (birth and developmental defects), spine surgery, foot problems, shoulder problems, revision surgery of endoprosthetics, infections around dentures, oncology and sports injuries. Common operations include arthroscopy, total hip or total knee replacements, scoliosis treatment and correction of congenital abnormalities such as club foot and hip dysplasia.

Research is conducted on experimental field in the medical technology domain (the Kolff Institute) in particular replacement of cartilage, and the clinical outcomes of orthopedic interventions and the impact on people and society in the long term, within PHR Share.

Offer for students:
Because the department has an active part in the curriculum with coaching of M1 and M3 students there is no room for small internships for bachelor students. There are a number of semi-doctor places available and academic internships for M3 students. However, it is possible for students to be part of a research group.

On request there is sometimes room for students to cooperate with an ongoing research. You can think of collecting data, conducting simple measurements or interview patients or test personnel.

Ongoing projects in the orthopedics department include research in the treatment of unexplained pain in patients receiving a new knee or hip, treatment of scoliosis, using computer navigation in oncology orthopedics, computer navigation in knee revision surgery and research into labor after a new knee or hip.
