Description

General information:
The forensic doctor performs autopsies and joins the police investigation if there is a non-natural death such as homicide, suicide, accidents, drowning or death due to medical malpractice. In addition, the forensic doctor helps the police and justice with medical issues, he traces evidence on the body for sexual offenses and makes injury statements in the interests of justice. Finally, the forensic doctor provides medical care to detainees and evaluates confused prisoners.

As the forensic doctor often fulfills both the role of therapist and consultant to the police at the same time, he must be constantly alert to respecting the privacy of the patient and medical confidentiality.
The implementation of forensic medicine in the province of Groningen is part of GGD Groningen.

Offer for Students:
Bachelor phase
In the second year of the bachelor you can subscribe for a forensics profiling project. This is an intensive profiling project spread over two semesters. It introduces you to the many aspects of forensic medicine through guest lectures, excursions (e.g. visit a cells corridor, forensic hospital or police laboratory) and walk with a forensic doctor in the night shift.

Master Phase
If you’ve got to do your social medicine internship in M2, or the “semi-arts” phase (M3), the GGD Groningen gives the possibility to walk along a day or night shift with a forensic doctor.
